| Title: | Parts Usage Based on Copy Quality |
| Department: | Printshop |
| Effective: | 3/26/2025 |
Purpose
This SOP outlines the guidelines for replacing printer parts based on copy quality, not solely on the parts yield counter. The goal is to maximize the useful life of each component while maintaining high-quality output and minimizing unnecessary part replacements.
Scope
This procedure applies to all onboard Print Shop machines under DG3 management across Royal, Celebrity, and Azamara vessels.
Policy Statement
Parts are only to be replaced when copy quality degrades, not simply because a part has exceeded its expected yield. Monitoring both the copy quality and the machine’s parts counter is essential for making informed decisions about part replacements.
Procedure
Monitor Copy Quality Regularly
- Visually inspect printed samples for any decline in print quality (e.g., streaks, ghosting, fading, smudges, lines).
- Use the Copy Quality Checklist as a reference during daily checks or when quality concerns are raised.
Track Part Usage
- Monitor part life counters via the machine’s internal tracking system.
- Record part usage data for reference, but do not change parts solely based on usage count.
Assess Before Replacing
- If the part is above or approaching its yield, assess whether there’s any noticeable drop in copy quality.
- Do not replace parts unless the copy quality has been visibly and consistently affected.
Investigate Consistent Errors
- If the machine shows repeated error codes, investigate the cause.
- Troubleshoot to determine whether the issue is due to a failing part, operator error, or environmental factors (e.g., humidity, paper type).
Decision-Making Criteria for Part Replacement Replace the part only if:
- There is a measurable or visible decline in copy quality.
- Troubleshooting confirms the part is the root cause of the issue.
Documentation
- Record all part replacements on OBP.
- Note the observed copy quality issues, error codes (if any), and justification for replacement.
Key Reminders
- Quality first: Copy quality is the main driver for part changes.
- Yield is guidance, not a strict rule.
- Monitor don’t assume: A high counter doesn’t automatically mean replacement is needed.
- Document everything for accountability and reference.
